Biomes and Ecosystems

Learning all about Biomes and Ecosystems
In Geography, we have been learning about biomes and ecosystems. We discussed the damaging impact humans can have on Earth, for example - overfishing, overhunting, deforestation and burning fossil fuels. We also discussed how humans can make a positive contribution to help save the planet, for example - recycling, finding better ways to travel and eating less meat.
We also learned more about global warming, and compared two images of glaciers. One from 107 years ago, and the other from 2 years ago. Red Kites noticed a big change, as the mass of the glacier from 2022 had been reduced significantly, due to the ice melting.
This then led to a discussion about how climate change can impact environments and have an adverse effect on ecosystems - which are important when it comes to the survival and preservation of different species.
For our activity, we created our own ecosystems in a jar from materials outside including soil and pond water, as well as using grass seed. We will keep the jars in class and monitor them over the next few weeks.
