We have been super busy in the run up to GLEFest last Friday. Thanks to all our families who attended to support. We're really looking forward to doing it all again next year! Here are some highlights of last week. Good luck to all our Year 6 pupils on their next steps in High School. Have an absolutely amazing Summer Break and we will see our familiar faces and some new ones in September for our next adventures to commence.
Red Kites spent time investigating reactions! First, they made 'magic water' and discussed the word 'insoluble' meaning unable to dissolve. Then, they made 'rainbow milk' and discovered that dish soap causes milk to separate due to the fat and proteins in it. Adding food colouring creates a rainbow pattern, due to the movement which is created between the two fluids. Next, they made lava lamp monsters. They noticed that the oil and water would not combine due to the different densities (oil is lighter than water). Add a catalyst (effervescent tablet) and this creates carbon dioxide gas which pushes through oil and escapes into the air - causing bubbles to rise and fall. Finally, they made 'elephant toothpaste'. They had to take this outside, as they needed to use hydrogen peroxide for this investigation. Yeast is used as a catalyst to speed up the process, and this, when mixed with soapy water creates a foam like substance (which looks like toothpaste big enough for an elephant!).
In Maths, Barn Owls have been exploring position, direction, and movement, though our lefts and rights have caused a bit of a muddle. To support our learning, we turned to a classic and had great fun stomping and sliding in the correct direction. Mrs Gibbs enjoyed it so much, she might take it on tour!
In Snowy Owls, we incorporated water into our PE lesson by having water bucket relay races and playing hot potato with water balloons. We also enjoyed running back and forth through the sprinkler and jumping up and down in puddles. The children extended this into their play by turning the slide into a water slide and trying to make a bath using the big trug buckets. We explored how the water pressure changed as we turned the tap up and down, noticing that the higher it was turned up the higher up the sprinkler sent the water. We also were kind and considerate of others as we became risk takers in the water whilst understanding that not everybody wanted to get wet.
2 weeks to go!!!!!
In science Barn Owls have been learning about the human body. They explored what organs are in our body and what their functions are. The children drew around one another, identified where in our bodies the organs are, named them and wrote what they do.
Our Year 6 children had an amazing time on their recent residential trip to Norfolk Lakes! They experienced a wide range of activities and came home very tired, but full of wonderful tales of their adventures.
Thanks to families old and new who joined us for our bug themed stay and play this morning. We went for a bug hunt using magnifying glasses to help us find lots of creatures. We spotted lots of signs of bugs where they had been nibbling the leaves and found lots hiding under the tough trays and inside the big tyre. We also made bug hotels to take home and painted pictures of butterflies. We finished with a snack and the Julia Donaldson story What the ladybird heard.
